Hospice PEI is a registered charitable organization assisting and supporting people in Prince Edward Island by preparing, supporting, and providing practical and emotional support for those living with a life-limiting or palliative diagnosis and supporting anyone who is grieving the loss of a person through our peer to peer support services and programs.
Most Islanders will face an end of life journey with a loved one. We are a community of caring individuals making each day count for Islanders and their families through our comfort and care services and programs. We also support anyone after a loved one’s death through our peer based grief support programs.
Hospice PEI relies almost exclusively on fundraising and donations. All donations received support our mission that includes volunteer training, hospice and grief support programs and services, and public education about end of life preparedness and Advance Care Planning.
The philosophy of hospice and palliative care is that it affirms life and embraces and focuses on quality of life for terminally ill persons. We focus on living and a person centered approach to services that gives everyone autonomy over their end of life journey. Hospice care recognizes dying as a normal process and that it is a logical conclusion to life on earth. At Hospice PEI, staff and volunteers provide non-medical emotional, practical and social support to individuals and families facing serious illness, to their unpaid caregiving, and to anyone grieving a death. Sometimes, the most meaningful support isn’t something you can buy or prescribe, it’s simply being there, listening, offering companionship, and showing understanding. To fulfil our mandate, we:
- Strive to help care recipients and their families and friends address physical, psychological, social, and practical issues.
- Support them as they deal with loss, fears, and hope.
- Believe that the provincial interdisciplinary palliative care team, of which Hospice PEI and their specially trained hospice volunteers are members, are knowledgeable and skilled in their discipline of practice to provide this care.
- Are committed to helping care recipients and their loved ones prepare for and manage self-determined life closure and the dying process.
- Embrace the intrinsic worth of every person and serve all without discrimination.
Our care recipients are living to the very last moment and there is always hope. The word ‘hope’ may need to be redefined. Hope for a cure and complete recovery are usually unrealistic; goals such as hope for relief from pain, courage, a new meaning in life, and a tranquil death with loved one’s present are realistic. As a family member or friend, watching the person you love die is never easy. But knowing that your loved one can live those last days in dignity and comfort and that you will be able to care compassionately for your loved one within the circle of your family and friends will be a great solace to you. As you (journey with) escort your loved one through this final passage, may hospice care help you face your farewells in peace and hope?
