Hospice PEI offers free grief support to Islanders who are experiencing the loss of a loved one. We do not provide professional counselling or therapy; rather we offer compassionate peer-based support.
People process and express their grief in different ways. Recognizing these differences, we offer a variety of programming designed to ensure that those wanting support can participate in programs that fit their needs. Whether it is through our one-on-one telephone volunteer grief support, attending a grief group meeting via Zoom or participating in our 6 or 8-week in-person grief programs, our programs offer individuals the opportunity to connect with others as they navigate their way through grief.
Current Grief Support Services Available
Regular phone calls from a trained Hospice PEI volunteer
Following the completion of a short intake process with our Grief Coordinator, individuals can be matched with one of our grief volunteers to receive individualized telephone support. With the support of a volunteer, individuals can share their thoughts and feelings without judgement. Our volunteers are there to walk beside you throughout your grief journey by offering understanding and support.
Disclaimer: Our grief volunteer support is not counseling; we offer peer support. Peer support is emotional and practical support between two or more people who share a similar experience, such as the loss of a loved one. Our peer support volunteers are not certified counsellors, or therapists.
Access to an online monthly grief support group using Zoom
This grief support group is facilitated by a staff member from palliative care and Hospice PEI. Our virtual grief support group offers peer support for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. The open group provides a safe, inclusive space to share and work through your grief. This group meets the third Thursday evening of every month from 7:00 – 8:00 pm and registration is required. Please call the Hospice PEI Grief Support Coordinator for more information and to register for the group.
8-week face-to-face grief support group
This 8-week structured grief program requires pre-registration. Participants are encouraged to commit to the full 8 weeks. The program is offered in a small group format and helps people work through their grief and move toward healing in a safe and supported environment. This program is designed to be both educational and supportive in nature. Each week information pertaining to grief will be explored and discussed, and we will look at healthy coping and adapting skills in a safe and nurturing environment. Please call the Hospice PEI Grief Support Coordinator for more information and to register for this closed group experience.
A lending library of books and resources on coping with grief
Hospice PEI has a variety of resources pertaining to grief and loss that we would be happy to lend to those who need. Please call the Hospice PEI Grief Support Coordinator for more information and to sign up for our lending library.
Help in identifying counselling services and other supports in your area
As Hospice PEI does not offer counselling, but rather peer-based support, if you are experiencing grief that requires more than our services are able to offer, our Grief Support Coordinator is happy to suggest other counselling services and supports in your area.
